Understanding the file system in your web space?
Each domain name hosted on our system has a "home directory". Within
this directory, you store all the HTML files, images, scripts, databases and
any other content associated with your website. When logged into the home directory
of one of your domains using FTP you will see the following folders:
htdocs: This is the folder that the website for the domain name points to. Inside
this folder, you should place your index.htm file as well as any other HTML
files, scripts and images that make up your website. You can create new
folders within htdocs to store images or HTML files. There is a cgi folder
provided for storing scripts.
private: This folder is for advanced users. Scripts running on your site have
access to this folder but the folder is not directly accessible form the web.
You should place any databases your site uses in this folder.
logfiles: Every
time someone visits your site, the system updates the current log file for your
website. Your log files are stored in this folder and you can download them
and delete them as you wish.
When writing or configuring scripts, such as Perl scripts or ASP scripts for
your website you may need to know the full physical path to your website's home
directory. This path is as follows:..e:\domains\mydomain.com\user..where mydomain.com
is your domain name (without the 'www').

FTP accounts and uploading your files to your web space?
When you host a domain name with Purplenames, we will provide you with a 24/7
FTP account to upload files to your web space whenever you wish. FTP stands for
File Transfer Protocol and is used to upload your web pages and images from your
computer to your web space so they appear live on the Internet. For instance,
if you purchased mydomain.com we will provide you with a username, password and
FTP hostname to use when configuring your FTP client. The username will always
be the name of your domain, in this case mydomain.com. Your password will be unique
and provided upon confirmation of your domain registration. Your FTP hostname
will always be ftp. your domain name, for instance ftp.mydomain.com.
If you require an FTP application we recommend either CuteFTP (www.cuteftp.com)
or WSFTP (www.wsftp.com) because of their ease of use. You can purchase these
products via their web sites or download trial versions to decide which you prefer.
Both applications make the process of uploading your web pages to your web space
quick and manageable. There are also free FTP applications available to download
on the Internet.

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Extensions?
Websites designed using FrontPage need to have FrontPage extensions installed
on the server to allow publishing via FrontPage and for certain FrontPage specific
components to operate such as the hit counter, hovering buttons and search facility.
By default your web space does not have FrontPage extensions installed. You
may, however, add FrontPage extensions to your web space via your control panel
for £60 plus VAT for each domain during a two-year registration period.
This covers the price of the license fee for the FrontPage extensions and Purplenames
are happy to provide these for customers at our cost.
The FrontPage 2000 extensions are backward compatible with all versions of FrontPage.
After installing FrontPage extensions we will provide you with a username and
password to use when publishing. Please note that you should only publish to
domains that have FrontPage extensions installed, FTP access is not recommended
as FrontPage keeps it's own set of custom files to control various operations.
If you run into difficulty uploading web pages using Microsoft FrontPage, we
suggest you consult the applications help section thoroughly before contacting
our customer service team with queries, as we may not be able to help with FrontPage
application specific questions.
To publish to your web space that includes FrontPage 2000 extensions, after
you have designed your website in FrontPage ensure you have saved all your edited
files to your local disk and then select Publish Web from the File menu within
FrontPage. You will then be asked for the location to publish your website to.
Enter your domain name here, for instance http://www.mydomain.com. After this,
you will be prompted for a username and password that has permission to publish
files to that location. Enter the username and password provided by Purplenames
when you added FrontPage extensions to your web space, not the FTP username
and password provided when you registered your domain name. When you have entered
these details, click OK and FrontPage will begin the process of uploading your
site to the server. Note that you may be prompted for the password a few times
during this process. After publishing is complete you will receive a confirmation
message.
Note: Once you have installed FrontPage extensions they cannot be removed from
your domain name without deleting and then re-adding the domain from our server.
This will result in all the files for your website needing to be re-uploaded.
We cannot refund the cost of FrontPage extensions once they have been added
to a web space.
